A lead researcher behind Ottawa’s taxpayer-funded “trusted news” directory denies it will profile Liberal-friendly media, insisting government officials won’t decide who makes the list.
As Blacklock’s Reporter reported, Laval journalism professor Colette Brin defended the Heritage-funded directory intended to help Canadians find local news they can trust.
“The purpose of the directory is to provide a comprehensive picture of local news availability across Canadian communities, not to identify preferred or approved publishers,” Brin said.
“There is no role for government oversight in determining which outlets are included.”
The three-year project, involving Laval, Concordia and Toronto Metropolitan universities, is due by 2029.
Access to Information records obtained by Blacklock’s said the directory would help Canadians find “local news they can trust” and policymakers determine “where interventions are needed.”
