A repeat violent offender released from prison the day before an Edmonton Sikh temple stabbing has been charged, but police say there’s no evidence so far of a hate motive.
Edmonton police announced Thursday that 27-year-old Austin Sim-Pelletier faces two counts of assault causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and mischief in connection with the Aug. 21 attack at Nanaksar Sikh Gurdwara.

Sim-Pelletier was arrested after allegedly entering the gurdwara shortly after 5 a.m., armed with a screwdriver and attempting to access the prayer area.
Two worshippers, 75 and 51, were stabbed before witnesses detained Sim-Pelletier. Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are recovering.
