The RCMP says it wasn’t responsible for ensuring its new border patrol Black Hawk could legally fly in Canada, even as it defends buying the helicopter after it was grounded over Transport Canada concerns.

As first reported by the Toronto Star, the RCMP won’t disclose how much it is paying under a $7.5M contract for a grounded helicopter, as critics question why Ottawa chose an aircraft that can’t legally fly in Canada.

The RCMP has continued paying for the Black Hawk for three weeks since it was grounded June 10 over concerns its use violated Canadian aviation regulations.
