The RCMP have arrested and charged Ousmane Bah, a 45-year-old male resident of Québec City, for hate-related offences against White people and making death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney.
So this new loosely defined hate law is going to be very problematic. With the amount of access people have to voice their opinion, every nut bar, mentally deranged person is going to end up charged.. So then what? Put them all in jail?? If police did not have probable cause that a true crime of violence was going to occur, it should not be taken seriously. This bill should be rewritten or repealed.
They can (and very likely will) charge people willy-nilly, by the score. Whether the charges would stand up to scrutiny matters not to them, because the punishment will be in the process.
Their resources are unlimited (i.e. our tax dollars), The resources we will need to defend ourselves from frivolous charges are not. I repeat: the punishment will be in the process.
Indeed, we watched this happen in the US to people that supported Trump. Many of his closest associates and lawyers bore the brunt of "lawfare". Some went to jail, some went bankrupt, some lost their law licences etc. Terrible and Trump himself was on trial several times for BS and wasn't able to even mount a defense. The judge wouldn't allow his lawyers to refute or prove the claim was a lie. Unbelievable.
