The Liberal government’s claims that late-term abortions are “rare” and only happen for “serious medical issues” have been directly challenged by a pro-life group that went undercover at several clinics, exposing the truth about the late-term abortion industry.

The group Right Now published a video on Wednesday of its investigation to disprove claims made on the Government of Canada website that late-term abortions were predominantly the result of “serious medical issues.”

The video, documented in 2023, shows a woman who was 22 weeks pregnant entering four Toronto abortion clinics, planning to request a late-term abortion based on personal choice.

However, at no point is the woman asked what her reason is. She is simply told it will be a three-day process and cost $2,137—cash only.

The video’s findings contradict former Toronto Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett’s claim that “the assertion that late-term abortions can be performed ‘for any reason, or no reason at all’ is just not true.”

Bennett made her claim in a letter to the National Post in 2013; while it may have been true then, it does not appear to be now.

The woman in the video is told by an employee of the Cabbagetown Women’s Clinic that while she is approaching that clinic’s limit, which is six months, there would be other places she could go.

“Canada doesn’t have a limit, okay?” she says, before recommending a nearby clinic that has no limit, adding that the other clinic will perform an abortion for a woman who is up to eight months pregnant.

“It’s very different than what we do when you’re after 25 weeks,” the employee explained. “It’s like a mini-still birth, they give you an epidural and you’re brining things out.”

Later, an abortion doctor can be heard saying, “the law in Canada and the U.S. overall, is that there is no ‘too far’” when it comes to having a cut-off point for a late-term abortion.

The doctor then advises the woman that she may find it difficult to find a doctor to perform the abortion after 36 weeks, but that up to 30 weeks “would be very possible.”

“The system certainly doesn’t think that’s too far,” said the doctor.

When the woman asks whether she or her fetus would need to be at a health risk in order for a doctor’s approval, the doctor responds, “that’s some classic abortion care.”

“That kind of abortion care hasn’t been practiced in Canada since the 1960s,” said the doctor.

The group launched a petition calling on the Carney government to pass legislation to “protect pre-born children by restricting late-term abortions after 20 weeks (5 months) of pregnancy.”

“Polls consistently show that the majority of Canadians want abortion restrictions, do not support tax-payer funded abortion and want greater regulations like parental and informed consent,” reads the Right Now website.

“Currently, public policy does not reflect public opinion on this issue because we have a government that is out of touch with not only the concerns of Canadians, but the safety of women and preborn children.”

According to the Government of Canada, “abortion is one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the country.”

“Roughly 1 in 3 women in Canada will have an abortion during their lifetime. Canada has limited information on how many trans and non-binary people access abortion services, but we know that they do as well,” it said.
