Video footage also captured a uniformed Parliamentary Protective Service officer saying that these weapons were permitted under a “religious exemption.”
Nationwide protests by pro-Khalistani groups in Canada have started in response to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation to the Canada-led G7 Summit in Alberta.
Razor blades, swords, and knives, are usually among the items prohibited from Parliament Hill grounds according to the PPS website.
However, in a written response to True North’s inquiry, a spokesperson for the Parliamentary Protective Service confirmed the exemption applies at all times.
“Religious exemptions are always in place on Parliament Hill,” the PPS said Monday in response to a written inquiry.
In Sikhism, the kirpan is a ceremonial blade worn by baptized Sikhs. As a religious item, its presence in secured public spaces like the Hill does not violate safety protocols and does not warrant equal enforcement of federal rules that non-Sikh Canadians have to follow.
No other religious or ideological group is known to have been granted permanent exemptions for carrying blades or weapons on Parliament Hill grounds.
The Parliamentary Protective Service did not clarify whether the exemption applies only to kirpans or includes larger swords and razor blades seen during the demonstration.

A religion is an intellectual choice and occasionally a political choice concomitantly as per the religion's dictates. Unfortunately, our constitution protects ''religions'' as if they were something you are born with and cannot change without help from plastic surgery. We are in for more of this nonsense in the absence of a modified constitution.
