Police probe targeted shooting in Abbotsford tied to extortion crisis

Police in Abbotsford are investigating an early-morning shooting they say is linked to an ongoing extortion case.
The Abbotsford Police Department says officers were called shortly after 3:30 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the 2500-block of Janzen Street.
When officers arrived, they found two unoccupied vehicles in a residential driveway that had been struck by bullets. No one inside the home was injured.
Sgt. Paul Walker said in a statement the shooting was “a targeted incident related to an ongoing extortion investigation.”
The incident comes as extortion concerns have escalated across the Lower Mainland, prompting a CBC-hosted “extortion town hall” in Surrey last Thursday — an event Mark Carney flew over en route from a photo-op at the White Rock Pier.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who, unlike the Prime Minister, attended a meeting in Surrey following the town hall, responded to the early morning shooting and the wider surge in extortion cases, saying in an X post that “Canadians deserve safety and peace of mind.”
“Yet, Liberal open borders and catch-and-release laws have increased extortions by 330%,” Poilievre said. “We need an emergency debate on our Conservative plan to stop extortion: mandatory prison time for extortion, kick out and keep out non-citizen extortionists, and pass a self-defence (castle) law.”
Police say the Abbotsford investigation remains active and no arrests have been announced.
