On September 20, Edmonton Police Service officers arrested Arjun Sahnan, 21, at Edmonton International Airport.
Sahnan faces multiple charges in connection with three drive-by shootings linked to a 2023 extortion series known as Project Gaslight.
Charged with two counts of discharging a firearm recklessly and three counts of possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition, Sahnan allegedly fired shots in late 2023 at homes in Edmonton, Winnipeg and Sherwood Park.
In the Edmonton incident, bullets were fired into an upstairs bedroom while occupants, including children, slept. In Winnipeg, a bullet passed through walls into an occupied room. The Sherwood Park shooting hit a children’s playroom, though the home was unoccupied. Ballistic evidence tied all three attacks to the same firearm.
Edmonton police say Sahnan fled to India after the shootings, prompting Canada-wide arrest warrants issued in April 2024.
In a separate case just days apart, Romaine Sam, 26, wanted in a Sudbury double homicide, was taken into custody by Canadian Border Services Agency agents on October 4 after arriving at Pearson International Airport in Toronto.
Sam is charged with two counts of second-degree murder for the August 29 shooting deaths at a Paris Street apartment. Police said he fled southern Ontario shortly after the killings, leaving the country before being identified. Both individuals have been remanded into custody.
