PBO says FIFA World Cup will cost over $1 billion to host

Co-hosting the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup will cost taxpayers more than $1 billion, with a projected cost of $82 million per game.

Canada’s Parliamentary Budget Officer estimates that co-hosting the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup will cost taxpayers more than $1 billion, with projected costs of $82 million per game.

“Based on the most recent information, PBO estimates total government support to co-host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup to be $1,066 million, of which federal support will be $473 million, with the remainder of $593 million funded by other levels of government,” reads the report published on Wednesday.
