Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon told supporters he has no intention of holding a referendum while U.S. President Donald Trump remains in office because the province’s “political future demands conditions that allow for an informed and calm debate.”

“A Parti Québécois government will not hold a referendum as long as Donald Trump is president of the United States,” reads a Parti Québécois statement released on Tuesday. “It must not be hijacked by the upheavals of American politics, nor by the dramatic actions of an unpredictable president, nor by fear-mongering campaigns.”
