Ottawa to use Swedish military system over U.S. amid trade tensions

Carney said that past assumptions which have defined Canada’s longstanding defence policy have now been overturned, without naming the U.S. directly.

Ottawa is in negotiations to procure early-warning aircraft technology from Sweden, opting to go with a non-U.S. supplier as Prime Minister Mark Carney continues his push to reduce spending on American military gear.

Carney announced his decision to buy the Swedish-made Saab at the annual CANSEC defence trade show in Ottawa on Wednesday.
