Ottawa approves nickel-cobalt mine in northern Ontario
Once operational, the project will have a mine ore production capacity of 240,000 tonnes daily, and a mill ore input capacity of 120,000 tonnes per day
The Carney government has approved the Crawford Nickel Project in northern Ontario, saying the mine will draw in $5 billion in investment and create 4,000 jobs during its construction and another 1,300 when it is fully operating. It marks the first mine Ottawa has approved under its new impact assessment process.
The open-pit site is located roughly 40 kilometres north of Timmins, Ont., and will extract nearly 90 million tonnes of nickel-cobalt annually, contributing $70 billion to Canada’s GDP over its expected 41-year lifespan.
