Our dairy industry is a case in point. Farmers are taxed on so many levels, which makes the end product more expensive. But American farmers are taxed far less, and if we were operating in a free market system, dairy products, like cheese, would be much less expensive if we were buying American. This would put our dairy industry out of business, so the government prevents that scenario by imposing tariffs on American imports.
Basically, the concept behind trade is that one entity has something another entity wants and needs and vice versa. There are various factors affecting a trade deal, but when governments interfere by imposing taxes at various levels of production, among other things, it makes the product/service more expensive and less competitive. And when politics gets involved, we have another level of difficulty that affects producers. Donald Trump wants to get rid of taxes on multiple levels for Americans. Here in Canada, production is strictly controlled by the government (milk is dumped). Farmers can't afford to lower prices due to overproduction, because they still have to pay the same level of taxation. In the end, it's all about taxation. RM
