OP-ED: Unapologetically Jewish and unafraid to confront Canada’s antisemites

On the eve of the second anniversary of Oct. 7, community advocate Matthew Taub travelled to Ottawa to announce that his new non-profit Unapologetically Jewish will ensure that Jews in Canada are “seen, heard and protected.”
The Toronto father told a press conference that under that banner they have officially filed human rights complaints against the cities of Toronto and Montreal, their mayors (Olivia Chow and Val LaPlante), the Toronto and Montreal police services boards and chiefs of police.
The complaints relate to their repeated failure to protect Jewish communities from anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic acts.
”We will not be silenced, we will not hide and we will not be diminished in the country we love and contributed to in every way,” he said.
Taub said he’s seen anti-Semitism “first hand” in Toronto (as have I) whether it be in school classrooms or police standing by while Jews are harassed in the streets and institutions refusing to act.
He said his organization intends to use the courts to make institutions accountable, challenge bias in media and demand police protection.
“Today in Canada we will not ask permission, we will live openly and proudly,” he said.
Well as we say in Hebrew, Kol Hakavod (all the honours) go to Taub for doing something — walking the talk instead of sitting with the very Prime Minister who announced his support of a Palestinian state, as the leaders of the large, well-funded Jewish advocacy groups and the useful idiots in the Liberal caucus did a few weeks ago.
The picture of these people cozying up to Carney made me sick.
I’ve learned over the past two years — with the virulent rise in anti-Semitism — that only continuous pressure, exposure, lawfare, loud voices and tough talk can counter the hate.
Those sitting on their hands and allowing the sick Jew hatred to escalate — in particular Chow, her Hamas caucus and weak police chief Myron Demkiw — need to be embarrassed and be held accountable.
It couldn’t come a moment too soon considering the toxic rallies that occurred and which the police sanctioned this past Oct. 7–marking the second anniversary of the most horrific and barbaric killing of Israelis since the Holocaust.
As Dr. Casey Babb observed why is this tolerated in Canada. Do haters take to the streets to celebrate 9/11 or other milestone events?
I’ve observed footage of the Montreal police threatening to arrest quiet protesters holding the Israeli flag and journalists documenting the events while chaos from Hamas sympathizers erupted behind them.
This person documented the day in detail. Here is an example of some of his tweets:
The legacy media Jew haters were in rare form:
In Toronto and neighbouring Mississauga, students walked out of class to glorify the martyrs.
At a Toronto secondary school, the principal Steve Yee, allowed the National Anthem to be sung in Arabic—an especially cruel (and deliberate) act on the anniversary of Oct. 7.
He has been inundated with letters from the Jewish community. Even Education Minister Paul Calandra commented that this was unacceptable.
I’m betting the Toronto District School board administration will do nothing since many of the top brass have similar sentiments to Yee.
On Tuesday evening in downtown Toronto, the usual Jew haters danced and chanted to celebrate the “martyrs” of Oct. 7.
These evil people reminded me far too much of the Gazans who sang and celebrated the morning of Oct. 7/23 when trucks of terrorists drove through Gaza City with bloody Israeli hostages (dead and alive) in the back of their trucks.
It makes me wonder why there is so much evil around us, so many lacking in a moral compass, why my community is not permitted to have one day to grieve the worst atrocities since the Holocaust.
We are living in a sick upside-down world.
That’s why I’m thrilled with Taub’s initiative.
And might I add, in case my readers haven’t already figured it out: I, along with my friends and family, am Unapologetically Jewish.
This article is right, Jews must be unapologetically proud of who we are. Yet Canada’s federal government has turned its back on its Jewish citizens, refusing to confront antisemitism head-on while hatred spreads on our campuses and streets.
If Ottawa won’t lead, then ordinary Canadians must. Stand with your Jewish neighbours, speak out against the lies, and push back against hate. Because silence in the face of this betrayal is weakness.
