OP-ED: Toronto’s anti-Jewish crime stats destroy the left’s Islamophobia narrative

A newly released Toronto police hate crime report proves what has been speculated about for 19 months now: The hatred we’re seeing in my city is all about anti-Semitism and has virtually nothing to do with Islamophobia.
And If one reads between the lines of the 15-page statistical report of 2024 hate crimes in Toronto, it is clear that the Toronto police have done virtually nothing to stem the tide of visceral Jew-hatred by using the many tools available to them to charge the menacing and often repeat perpetrators.
The police hate crime stats — which will be presented at Wednesday’s Toronto Police Services Board meeting — show that 40% of the hate occurrences in 2024 targeted the Jewish community.
The report says there were 443 hate crime occurrences reported to the Service in 2024, 177 of which involved the Jewish community.
Note they say “reported.” Judging from what I’ve seen on the streets of my declining city, I’d say many were not reported.
I suspect the victims say, “why bother” since the police give them the impression they couldn’t care less and are at protests, for example, merely to keep the peace and to babysit the terrorist sympathizers.
The victimization of LGBT groups comes in at 20% of reported occurrences followed closely by anti-black occurrences at just under 20%.
Contrary to the constant propaganda from our leftist politicians, just 6% of the hate occurrences were anti-Muslim. In fact, this decreased 15% from the year before.
Despite this, the pandering activists and the Liberal government’s Islamophobia czar Amira Elghawaby continually draw a false equivalency between alleged Islamophobia and anti-Semitic acts.
In between patting themselves on the back for actually recording the hate crimes, expanding their mandate and increasing staffing, the report shows in living colour how little the Toronto police have done to get the hateful terrorist sympathizers off of Toronto’s streets.
Most of the hate occurrences are lumped under the category of “mischief” and are not broken down as what kind of mischief.
Is it mischief against places of worship or schools?
Is it mischief to property particularly the interruption of the public’s right to use or enjoy public property?
There are just three assault charges and three uttering threats charges against Jews.
By contrast, nine people were arrested for assaults against Muslims.
Repeated video footage of protests, marches and other assorted mayhem perpetrated by the terrorist sympathizers tells us otherwise.
Although the police stats show that about 25% of the offences occurred on Toronto’s streets, the report says only eight counts of public incitement of hatred charges — six occurring at a protest — were laid in 2024.
The report says in February of 2025 police arrested a would-be member of a terrorist group at the weekly Bathurst St./Sheppard Ave demonstration.
Following the arrest, the police found a number of items, including weapons, after executing a search warrant on the accused.
One charge of uttering threats against the Jewish community by an alleged terrorist after 19 months of harassment, stalking, occupation of our streets, vandalism, fire bombings, and repeated shouts of “Death to the Jews” by the terrorist sympathizers in our public square?
The Toronto police should be very proud of themselves. I say that with the utmost of sarcasm.
With this report, police chief Myron Demkiw and his force have shown themselves to be absolutely inept,
Last September I reported on a talk by lawyer Mark Sandler, who has formed a group called the Alliance of Canadians Combating Anti-Semitism (ALCCA).
Noting that “hate and intimidation (towards the Jewish community) is being tolerated in this city, he said he’d submitted a series of recommendations to the Toronto Police Services Board on how to deal with protests, demonstrations and occupations.
He said many criminal enforcement measures were not being used by police.
The most basic one is the requirement to get a permit to protest or pray on our roadways. In some countries in Europe (Belgium and Germany for example) water cannons have been used to disperse those occupying the streets illegally.
The others include:
wilful promotion of hatred against Jews and/or Zionists
intimidation, violence and threats or blocking a highway (see note about water cannons above)
criminal harassment — causing a disturbance and disguising oneself to commit an offence (in masks and keffiyehs).
Very little has changed since last September.
The police can’t seem to get it (or don’t want to get it) that the more they appease the radical Islamists, the worse it gets.
Besides, it never stops with the Jews. Westerners are next and before the Liberal left goes into attack mode, take a look at what is happening in London, England.
Why the Toronto police continue to sit on their hands and defer to the mob is beyond me.
Perhaps it’s political. They’ve been told to stand down by our feckless mayor and council.
Perhaps they’re intimidated by the radical Islamists.
Or perhaps it’s easier to go after low-hanging fruit such as the odd member of the Jewish community who speaks up at a protest.
Whatever it is, they’re not doing their job.
Their report says all we need to know about how they've let down my community.
