Couldn't have anything to do with the CFIA slaughtering millions every few weeks. Or could it?

It could very well be the problem because avion flu is rampant in USA and in BC

So, kill every option to find out a cure for the disease. That makes total sense! (tongue n cheek)

That should tell us all why over 400 Ostriches were killed last week. Perfectly healthy birds, even the US Government offered to take them for research purposes. However, no, for some reason they needed to be expired.

Expand full comment
Moe's avatar

We only have the owners say so that they were healthy . Why didn't the owner have all the birds tested. They did not, so there remains a question about the their health.

The CFIA wouldn't let the family test the ostriches. Total corruption from the government.

From what I read on Rebel News, the owner’s offered to have them checked by a veterinarian. The authorities told them that if they did they would be charged with obstruction of justice. Go figure.

The ostrich farmer was barred from testing any of their animals with $200,000 fines and 6 months in jail for each ostrich tested.

How's that for over reach!?

It would certainly deter me.

Terrible.

Testing them would have saved this country so much money.

The CFIA (AKA Canadian WEF/WHO/UN government ) spent millions on this operation.

Disgusting.

Moe's avatar

It would be nice to know the regulation number and when it was approved by order-in-council and which government did it. The regulation should have also indicated reasons why testing was forbidden.

Ner Ther's avatar

Could also be because the Canadian Government doesn't know what they are doing. That is a proven fact that a lot of Government employees don't know what they are doing, which is why we have such a high influx of Government employees and contract people.

Supply management the curse on the Canadian consumer, The dairy cartel & chicken cartel rolling in $$$$ while Canadians go to food banks to feed their families. The hope on the horizon is that Donald Trump will force the left wing extremist socialist Liberals into a corner where they are forced to throw the cartels under the outhouse.

OH JOY!!!

So thanks to the abomination that is Supply Management our Chicken Prices are about to go the way of our beef prices.

They just (sadly) culled the entire flock of Ostriches in BC but they culled the wrong things.

Those who legislate and support Supply management should be culled and they can be culled simply.

Disband all Supply Management.

Remember... Fully supported by Politicians of all stripes so you just know it is a bad thing.

You got it right. But the headline of this article is still stupid.

William Stewart's avatar

Yes but still scary..

Hamburger... Previously could be found on sale not that long ago for around 99 cents a pound for regular ground... Now that one, on sale can be seen for around $7 on sale for a pound... Steak is now all but unaffordable to many, perhaps most.

It has also not gone unnoticed that chicken as well, as per the article has been continually climbing in price recently.

Where I am a few I know have noted that whereas chicken regularly went on sale but now it is rarely seen on sale and when it is the "sale" price is where the retail price was but a short while ago.

... SO ...

If, as in this article supply management has been shown to be a complete failure and disaster (at least in the case of chickens) why do we have it at all if it doesn't work.

... THE WHY IS SIMPLE ...

This is Canada... Failure is an attribute of its ruling class and those who support it and prop it up ..

It's sadly the way things now roll in this now lost country.

What a damn shame.

{Logan} Untitled's avatar

I realize what you're saying. But to make it more knowledgeable. The USA has for the last year wiped out most of it's chicken production because of avian flu. As they have been doing in BC. Beef is in a great shortage. And the wholesalers sell to the highest bidder. The shortage comes as the costs of feed is very high and pasters have been poor for the last couple of years. A lot of farmers have either cut their herd size, or quit completely. And on top of this we have millions of more people to feed with all the illegal immigrants in here. Most of them eat only beef or chicken. The chicken supply is quit low as well. And most of the costs in farming is directly caused by the federal government, with taxes and restrictions. So don't don't jump on the farmer. And the dairy is a different story, which everyone must know.

Expand full comment
William Stewart's avatar

Indeed but am not jumping on the farmer, at least for the most part although there are exceptions.

Where I am .. Moderately rural I actually know somebody who raises chickens on an industrial scale.

And YES... While indeed he has complained about that which you stated including the high costs of power he absolutely despises those who are responsible for Supply Management.

He (I think) rightly has labelled them an out of control bureaucracy who generally speaking pays little attention to him or those he knows who also raise chickens.

He is also quite familiar (as would make sense) with eggs and dairy and don't even get him started on the Dairy part and Quebec.

... SO Indeed and your additional input certainly offers a more detailed look at some considerations.

That however does not preclude Supply Management now being an apparently incompetent and non functioning bureaucracy which seemingly benefits a few at the expense of many, many more.

... In short...

Supply management has to go but will not as it is one of the most powerful lobbies around.

Expand full comment
{Logan} Untitled's avatar

Yes you are right about the supply management. But it is so tied in with the elite and the federal government. I can only see it going away with complete bankruptcy. And how to make that happen? Everybody quits buying dairy products. I have been and still am connected to people in the beef industry. That's where I get my info from.

Expand full comment
William Stewart's avatar

Got ya and information appreciated.

Sadly while bankruptcy in a free market system is always an option not in this case and besides that would probably be an even worse scenario for consumers. At least in the short term.

Interesting .. And love your connection to the industry ...

Obviously mine is on the clucking, egg laying side of things but I suspect there is likely a high degree of commonality there.

OH... And since Supply Management lobbies of all stripes wield huge political power in Canada, both Federally and Provincially they indeed are going nowhere even as those systems become an ever increasing irritant to trade with other countries and not just America.

There have also been "mysterious" fires at some plants for both chicken & beef. Why is that do you think? I think it's being done on purpose. Our food security is at risk & it's being done for a reason: total control of the population that will be forced to eat "fake meat." We have to "save" the planet you know. What a bunch of B.S.!!

Interesting the causes listed, specifically the sharp rise is beef prices with people looking for alternative meat protein sources. Here is another one. It is only an observation and not a criticism. We have had a massive influx of immigrants, legal or not, asylum seekers or not, and the numbers are over a million giving Canada the greatest population growth of any country in the world this past year. The greatest number of these people are from third world and Islamic countries. What do you think was the main source of animal protein in their home countries? Yeah, chicken. For some it might be pork, but the majority is chicken. So the demand for chicken soars, and the Canadian government and the marketing boards haven’t figured it out yet. Oh boy.

Checked World Population Review for 2024 and did find that the U S had the largest immigrant intake so to speak of around 50 million, while Canada was down the list at only 8 million or so. So yes, you are correct in terms of totals. But that 50 million in the States was only around 15% of their population whereas the 8 million were around 21% of Canada’s. Thanks for making me check. Cheers!
