But how about first teaching them to read, write, and do math?

While I don’t disagree at all with the concerns expressed here, I do not trust the majority of teachers to lead these types of discussions and it hurts me to say that (there are many teachers in my family and one of my degrees is a BEd). If I had evidence to the contrary, I would gladly side with you, because you’re 100% correct. Parents also are culpable if they ignore what’s going on in the classroom and don’t challenge their children when they regurgitate their teachers’ activist positions. How do we fix this? The good teachers, the silent ones, have to start fighting their ideologically possessed administrators, peers and unions, for one thing. Otherwise, charter schools and homeschooling will become the norm. Post-secondary institutions also need to start failing students who are incapable of forming a proper argument for both sides of an issue and ensuring that the lunatics neither graduate nor fail upwards. Classical liberal values in education are worth saving, but in many respects I fear it’s too late for our rotten institutions.

Teachers and school boards need to stick to teaching kids the basic subjects like math, reading, history, etc, rather than indoctrinating and introducing them into gender and trans dysphoria, and radical far left wing political ideologies. Stop trying to turn our kids into far left wing political agitators and activists and stop trying to indoctrinate and influence the kids into believing they are the opposite sex trapped in their bodies.....

“When students engage with opposing viewpoints under the guidance of a teacher…” You are assuming the teacher can be neutral. Past experience says that is not usually the case. Each teacher brings their own agenda and those who have the most extreme agendas know that schools, elementary through university, are the easiest to hit.

I experienced that in a small northern town in the mid eighties, he went on about how the NDP was the only party for the worker, and they had to control the means of production. Right over my head at the time but I liked that teacher and his words stuck, and it wasn’t until decades later I educated myself on the indoctrination that was happening there. I’m sure it’s not an isolated case

MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying) is exactly the kind of controversial topic that requires critical thinking and open discussion. In 2024, it accounted for 5.1% of all deaths in Canada. This discussion addresses the issue with the depth it deserves: https://youtu.be/mIrwi_vp9YY?si=fIwo72CYJxEEFSFr

Refund the education system and give the money to parents

Absolutely. Let the parents choose. They know their kids better than anyone.

They have a far better chance of finding the truth outside of the school system taken over long ago by special interest groups . They need to get back to basics and learn necessary subjects and not be taught by indoctrinated people posing as teachers . The less time they waste on these unnecessary subjects the better .

Rousso writes, "Controversial topics are not distractions from education. They are central to it."

You neglect to attach any value to such mind altering topics as transgenderism, sexual behaviours, keeping secrets from parents….need I go on?? Why are they “controversial”????? Where, one wonders is your true focus????

Premier Smith is wise and caring about ensuring our youngsters learn the 3Rs and develop critical thinking skills! Future generations will be forever indebted! All these “controversial topics” you are so hot about can most certainly be looked at when kids reach an age capable of complete adult understanding! Ask yourself why there are currently so many young folks with mental illness issues? Transgender mutilation is a very prevalent one!!!

You might take a “rational page” from Danielle’s book Mr. Rousso!!!!

Much like the media, if it is paid for by the government, it is controlled by the government. If you honestly think there is open and free dialogue about the pain death and disaster of socialism communism in the 20 th century you are part of the problem. All education should be open source. By that I mean every educator in public school and university should be filmed and available for audit by every taxpayer. No exceptions, what they teach our children they would never repeat outside their own bubble.
