In Canada and very sadly the abomination that is Supply Management is supported by ALL PARTIES.
This small but powerful lobby group who easily intimidates both Liberal and Conservatives and who on a daily basis rips off all Canadian Consumers and laughs about it have all of Canada's Major parties in their laps.
This has not only cost Consumers dearly it has and continue now to cost Canada Big time and not only with respect to the USA but all countries we trade with have express concern and have issues with Canada's Supply Management systems.
This while the fake, liar and fraud who is now making the last jerk's travelling habits look like amateur time travels the world signing meaningless MoU's or worse bringing in tens of thousands and vehicles that spy on the country and its people.

One of the first bills pass, and passed UNANIMOUSLY in the current session of the farce that the Canadian Parliament has become was to enshrine the Supply Management crap into untouchable status.

Points taken. However I believe trying to modify/save supply management will only result in further, eventual disaster. The proper path forward is to dump supply management altogether, just like supply management dumps good milk, which our farmers are coerced into either not producing, or else dumping. Our hard working, honest, Canadian farmers should be allowed to produce as much food as they can, thereby lowering prices to the consumer and then let market demand itself regulate how much is profitable to grow/produce.
While I respect the writers opinion in my heart I really believe Trump is doing everything he can to stop trading with Canada permanently. In the US we have new steel, aluminum production and some auto assy & manufacturing has already been brought back to the US. With Venezuala's oil now entering our market we will not need Canadian oil. Iran if the new leaders come in agreeable to the US that is more oil that is available. The US has plenty of natural gas and does not need to import. Our diversive climate allows us to grow almost anything we need. We are developing a robust chip manufacturing here and trading with our favored partner Japan for more. Coffee, bananas and a few others we import but Canada can't provide them anyway. We don't need Canadian jets, planes, machinery, steel, aluminium, timber so what's left. Additionally we have invested billions in critical minerals and new processing plants are being built.
Carney has sold you a bill of goods and his Trump bad nonsense leaves you in a bad place. This is why Carney is so desperate to get cozy with communist China and caste system India. He's a real WEF Davos greenie globalist that is selling your great country down the river. (and I didn't even bring up the so called Indigious that seem to run the rest of the show)

I am a farmer/rancher. (not dairy). I have several neighbours that are dairy farmers. Around here there are about 75% less dairy farmers than there used to be, maybe less. Every generation, a decision is made. Do you want to continue be be in dairy or get out. The ones that have remained have built modern barns, and tripled or quadrupled the herd size. And still made it a family only run farm. And produce most of their own feed, for the cattle. What many people forget, the board, is the farmers as a unit, negotiate a price for the milk, that the 2 or 3 milk maga processing companies, like Sapotu Inc purchase. The smaller cheese and butter companies, get to buy the milk at the same price. These large companies along with the large grocery chains would love the buy the milk below the cost of production and keep all the profit for themselves. And they also like the idea that people are blaming the farmers, and not looking at them. Walmart in the USA, is buying dairy barns. And in order for them to sell at the lowest price, they have to buy everything cheap.
The disadvantage about the supply management system, is the quota as become very expansive. As there are no more small dairy farms left to get out.
