OP-ED: Toronto is dying, Chow's got to go
"We have a court system and lefty judges who regularly cave to hateful protesters and drop charges — but even worse, pander to violent offenders by giving them reduced sentences, if at all."
It’s been nearly 48 hours since the horrific mass shooting at the Salsa on St. Clair festival — during which two people were killed, and a series of people (perhaps four?) were injured — yet the flow of information has been limited, to say the least.
This is what happens when the largest city in Canada has a weak, incompetent police chief and a mayor more concerned with virtue signaling and appears to have no clue (or doesn’t care) about the chaos she’s created.
There’s no doubt Mayor Olivia Chow is in over her head.
In fact, after spewing out an absolutely incoherent comment at the scene of the shooting Saturday night (she sounded drunk), she wasted no time dressing up and marching with another visible minority group.
Besides being incompetent, she has no moral compass whatsoever.
This was bound to happen.
Seven years ago — while at the Toronto Sun — I wrote a column about how Toronto was quickly descending into another Seattle.
Streets full of drug addicts who urinate and defecate in front of fine shops; encampments in parks and “Twinkletoes” politicians who let it all happen.
It got worse during the COVID years when Mayor John Tory was at the helm, but was too distracted by his affair with a young woman 35 years his junior who worked in his office to stop the decline.
After he resigned and we got the political train wreck and socialist Chow, things continued their downhill slide.
Propped up by the regressives at Progress Toronto—who appear to thrive on a city steeped in chaos— Chow has occupied herself by dancing (very badly) at events and grabbing free food and swag, while ignoring the spike in crime.
Besides our weak, ineffectual police chief, we are stuck with a blowhard of a police services board chairman (Shelley Carroll), more concerned with power (and silencing people who criticize her) than with doing the job of keeping the city safe.
We have seen Islamists and other violent thugs shoot at synagogues, vandalize Jewish institutions, and threaten Jews and others in their own neighbourhoods. It boggles my mind that they are given full rein to prey on our downtown streets.
We have a court system and lefty judges who regularly cave to hateful protesters and drop charges — but even worse, pander to violent offenders by giving them reduced sentences, if at all.
Of course, no one in political office wants to admit we have a problem with black-on-black crime, mostly those in gangs and who deal drugs.
That appears to be what happened on St. Clair.
These thugs don’t give a crap about anyone but themselves and their turf battles. So if they kill a few people shooting it out, why should they worry?
This horrible violence has become so normalized that we soon forget about poor innocent victims like 44-year-old mom Karolina Huebner-Makurat, shot during a fight in the summer of 2023 between two drug dealers outside a safe injection site.
Repeatedly, politicians mouth platitudes they think will absolve them from actually doing something. I’m so sick of hearing them say their thoughts and prayers are with the victims. They don’t care one bit.
If they did, they’d ensure there were consequences for criminal behaviour, and they’d stop pandering to illegals by letting everyone into our Sanctuary City.
The police have to stop saying Toronto is a safe city, and Olivia Chow has to stop blaming the violence on “illegal guns.”
The latter is a favourite mantra of socialists who refuse to admit that their soft-on-crime policies have told the gangbangers and terrorist sympathizers that Toronto is their playground.
They are adept at commenting on “senseless gun violence” as if they had absolutely nothing to do with it — as if the guns just found their way themselves onto St. Clair.
We certainly don’t need a pep talk from the Dancing Queen, who pretends to be mayor.
I, along with a growing number of people, am sick and tired of hearing excuses from do-nothing politicians and being gaslit by the police.
We want action.
We want them to do their jobs.
If they can’t, they should step down and let someone with a spine pick up the slack.
