"Canada’s agricultural supply management system has to go." Amen to that. This is another example of the US fighting for what should be right in canada. Where are our own leaders? Not including the ndp/liberals here in the question where are the leaders, it is already known.

yup...Beijing..they just haven't officially announced it ...yet

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

So should the subsidies in America be gone.!

Since 2018, the PPC (Max Bernier) has been calling for an end to Supply Management.

William Stewart's avatar

On this one every Federal Party is not a friend of consumers.

When the fraud whose name is Carney was sadly elected as what is left of Canada's PM one of the first pieces of legislation that was passed was the complete abomination of a piece of legislation that totally protected the other abomination called "Supply Management" from any and all things.

IT PASSED WITH UNANIMOUS CONSENT.

SICKENING...

Just plain sickening.

For that one ... Blame all politicians of all stripes.

On this one they are all complicit in abandoning beleaguered Canadian consumers for the sake of a small group of people (mostly in Keebek) who wield power way outside their size.

What a shame that all the MPs in Parliament on such an important issue don't seem to give a rat's ass about the vast majority of people who actually voted for them.

Getting reelected is the only god that politicians bow down to. What is good for Canada is not in the equation.

Canada's Supply Management System has always been about Corporate Communism, with Canadian citizens footing the bill.

Communism for Corporations, something increasingly valueless, Democracy, for Canadians.

The country is held hostage by mostly Quebec-based multi-nationals. In Canada ... this time including les Quebecois ... we're paying twice what consumers in the US pay.

Yet our bought-and-paid-for leaders(?), through their bought-and-paid-for media, will continue to defend this system. And they will defend it to our death.

Muriel West's avatar

Absolutely true! If it was any place but Quebec it would no longer be an issue. Pandering for their votes. It's corruption at its' finest and every political party is complicit in keeping this corruption at the countries peril. There are a very small number of farmers that profit some have tried to break free and show the milk wasted. But they are mainly large corporations that are the big winners.

Don Hrehirchek's avatar

Yep to "our death".

..but not without bringing some of 'em along for the ride..🇨🇦

Have you actually bought whole milk in the USA? I have and at the store where I purchased my gallon of milk had 3 types of milk. One the cheapest was full of drugs etc. second had drug free milk like we have here in Canada. Except for the exchange rate it sold for approximately same price here in Ontario at the time. The third was organic milk that was very expensive.

I had friends who owned a dairy farm and I can remember when they were forced to dump milk down the drain because of supply management. Sad but true, this system is outdated and has to go.

Price fixing by the government is okay, but private industry can't. Price fixing on a loaf of bread they said, and took them to their fixed verdict court.

Supply management combined with reckless and irrational culling of flocks (instead of letting Nature do its job and build herd immunity with the survivors of whatever bugs ails them) has to go. It's culling of the government that should happen. Supply-management protects poor producers at the expense of good ones.

Tatanka's avatar

I don't agree on the part that supply management protects poor producers.

Supply management only supports the bigger established producers because of the insane price of quota that only they can afford to buy and that makes it very hard for aspiring producers to enter the game.

Andree's avatar

Maybe I'm not up to date but in the first years (70s-80s), it was a criticism I heard often.

Tatanka's avatar

Those quotas should never have become a tradable commodity.

The high cost of that already in the eighties prevented me from becoming a dairy farmer.

I doubt if there has been a single new dairy upstart in the last 25 years that was not already an established farm (inherited)

Andree's avatar

I agree the quota should never have become a commodity. I am sorry that prevented you from your chosen path. I hope you have found one that satisfies you. Governments should never try to control people's life.

Tatanka's avatar

Nah, i'm fine , i went into ranching beef and then switched to bison. Easiest occupation ever. Beats every form of farming as far as labour goes.

Andree's avatar

A curse that turned into a blessing. I like that (also explain your pseudonym).

This shows that the Carney goons are only interested in keeping the Quebec party on their side in order to have power. This goes to show that the interest of Canadians is not a concern to the Liberals. This is all the more reason why Alberta must gain independence to determine our own future because Ottawa is self centered. The Liberals have proven they do not represent Canadians best interest but screwing Canadians in order to keep a small segment in Quebec happy.

Albertian's avatar

Amen to Alberta independence.

David James's avatar

It is the only next logical step if they are ever to move forward.

Dennis Cross's avatar

Well presented. Socialism in any form is just plain bad. A free Market System must be totally free to respond to the actual demands of the Marketplace. One more reason to vote for Alberta Separation.

James Turner's avatar

Exactly right. You can't pick and choose.

Debra L.'s avatar

The G-Parasites are purposely destroying Canada from the inside out. Most Canadians are too dumbed down to see this. If we meet the planned increased immigration rates, and food is more scarcer than ever what do people think is going to happen!!!!

David James's avatar

Debra, a goverment arranged human cull. Never ever believe, "The government is here to help."

Plane Hunter's avatar

Supply Management is all about the Quebec voters. The Lieberals could care less about the rest of us.

Muriel West's avatar

The Conservatives are complicit as well!

Anthony Frizzell's avatar

This has everything to do with power control & greed..!!!

Doris Painchaud's avatar

Supply management is also unfair to all the other farmers in Canada. They sell there grain at market price period. Often those prices are the same at the same rate as the 1970's and cost has increased way more than two fold.

Michael Craig's avatar

I am presently in Arizona.Yesterday I bought a gallon of milk,Lucerne,for 1.99$.convert to Canadian 2.80$.

Chicken half price and same for eggs.

Cost of living 40% lower, maybe more.

James's avatar

agreed , it must go !

Brian Giesbrecht's avatar

In 2017 Max Bernier campaigned on a promise to abolish the supply management system. He lost his bid to become leader of the Conservative Party because Andrew Scheer sided with the mainly Quebec dairy lobby to keep supply management in place. It was then that the Conservative Party could have stood up on its hind legs and announced that it was a real Conservative Party. It didn’t, and we now have a Conservative-lite party that doesn’t know what it stands for

Absolutely true!

It's behind closed doors in the church basements it all happens. Vetting is non existent.
