OP-ED: Carney and the legacy media are high on anti-American hysteria

Let me make one thing clear: I have always been a proud Canadian, the kind who travelled with suitcase tags identifying me as Canadian and who has a Canadian flag outside my house in Toronto.
But the bloom is off the rose, thanks to nine years of Liberal leadership under Justin Trudeau, an opportunistic Premier in Ontario and successive incompetent progressive mayors.
I have watched my city decline into one rampant with drug addicts, Jew-haters and encampments. I hate going downtown. So it has been a welcome relief to travel to Florida the past few winters as snowbirds.
Aside from escaping the snow, we’ve left the anti-Semitism and a declining city behind. My point in saying this is that it is okay to be patriotic but to become anti-American — largely out of ignorance and denial — is not okay.
Since U.S. President Donald Trump announced tariffs on Canada (now slated for April 2) we’ve seen a wave of anti-Americanism and hostility that has bordered on hysterical. Much of it is being fuelled by our politicians, most particularly Liberal leader Mark Carney, Premier Doug Ford and as of late Toronto mayor Olivia Chow. Ford, of course, has removed all US liquor from LCBO shelves and Chow has created some sort of shop local campaign.
Let’s not forget the legacy media either. Their actions are highly opportunistic. But it amazes me how easily some Canadians are manipulated, just like we’re back in 2020 and it’s the pandemic all over again.
The “Buy Canadian” and “Elbows Up” campaigns are puerile — fuelled once again by a Liberal party desperate to win another election. But Canadians, like good soldiers, fall in line.
I’ve seen Canadians proudly announce on social media that they are cancelling their trip(s) to the U.S. this year allegedly because of the Trump tariffs. Some have said they’re not even flying through American airspace. Some show themselves pictured in snowy Ontario with a maple leaf beside them. Others claim that Americans are apologising to them over the tariffs.
The legacy, Trump-hating media have jumped on the bandwagon publishing stories that fewer Canadians visited the US in February. The CBC has indicated that 500,000 fewer tourists came south last month. They even quote people in the travel industry who say there is a “souring mood towards the U.S.”
We just received a flyer from one Florida real estate agent — who claims to be from a “small town in Canada” — telling Canadians “now is the perfect time” to sell one’s home in Florida and move back to Canada. The foolish opportunist failed to acknowledge that Snowbirds already live in Canada half the year. But you can’t blame her for her creativity.
Not one of these stories or narratives has mentioned the obscenely declining Canadian dollar, down nearly 10-cents since last February at this time. The exchange has no doubt forced some people to stay home. Yet the media doesn’t mention it because that wouldn’t fit with the anti-Trump narrative.
I can say that — other than one month visiting Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand — my wife and I have spent the entire winter in Florida and while the exchange hurts, you just adjust. There is no anti-Canadian sentiment compared to the hostility I see in my home country. I’m driving around with my Ontario plates and no one cares.
The only issue I’ve encountered this winter are distracted Florida drivers who have hit me not once—but twice! No one knows about the “Elbows Up” campaign, which I am personally glad about. Not one American has apologised to me for the tariffs. Nor should they.
Instead of looking inward and viewing this as a wake-up call to improve our country and tighten our borders, insular Canadians — easily manipulated by Liberals and NDPers — are convinced they need to fight.
In fact, some are so manipulated they are prepared to support the very party and Justin Trudeau-esque leader that got us in trouble in the first place—instead of demanding that they fix the damage.
If indoctrinated Canadians want to go to Dollarama and buy more Canadian flags, or cancel a trip, or stay out of US airspace, that’s their choice. What concerns me is the anti-American sentiment.
What will be even worse is if the Liberals — as they flail to win the upcoming election — capitalize on the anti-Trump, anti-American sentiment. They’re only hurting themselves but there’s no doubt in my mind that they will.
Carney is not up to the job of PM and simply replacing Trudeau does not eliminate the fact that the Liberals are out of gas and out of fresh ideas.
What a joke Ford is....he should not be allowed to run under the conservative name because he is NOT a conservative. Unfortunately the big problem is voters are just DUMB and we will get what we deserve if we vote Liberals in again. Sad state of affairs how uneducated and sheepish voters here are. Just get educated before voting, please!
I agree whole heartedly. Our municipal, provincial and federal governments in every province are dumpster fires. So the gullible, MSM manipulated, Canadians need to forget about the US issues and focus on the changes we need in Canada.
