Dr. Sylvain Charlebois writes, "A standard two-kilogram bag of white rice now sits close to $10, a hefty increase for one of the most affordable global staples."
The writer is wondering about the rise in rice sales here. Well that's not because of the canadian retailer. It's because of all the immigrants that have landed here from the middle east and Asia. That's their standard food stapple. Hell I rarely eat rice. I don't know anyone who eats rice regularly.
I am Canadian and like Indonesian food. I eat lots of rice and noodles, and by the way, potatoes are also getting up in price. Rice, in comparison, is way cheaper if you buy a larger volume bag, say 8 or 20 kilogram imported bags. Rice stays suitable for a long time, in a proper rice storage container, while potatoes, if you leave them more than two weeks, start to get bad.
No secret at all.Put them when dried off in breathable bags(not solid plastic) and put in a cool spot above freezing and thats it. I put them in my heated( no higher than +10c) garage on a cool spot.I grow the Yukon variety potato
That is a good idea so long as you have suitable storage. We have some heat in our attached garage but if it’s 20 below outside, its still 10 below in the garage. We don’t have a cold room and if I store potatoes in a box in the dark by the back door, they go all soft in not a very long time. I think you could eat them but they don’t look very appetizing. It’s the same with things like carrots. You can store them in buckets of sand but I’m not hauling heavy buckets of sand up and down a flight of stairs to the basement!
I have in the past bought a large sack of rice thinking this would be a good filler for the family. Taste was disgusting after cooking and we found flies, sticks and all sorts in there. Never again.
This is maybe a bit misleading. I buy Jasmin rice from Thailand in an 8-kilogram bag for $21. I eat rice twice or thrice a week. I prefer Jasmine rice over Basmati rice, but that is a personal taste. I lived in the Philippines for many years.
I got used to eating lots of rice, and there are many varieties, but it all depends on your taste. Don't buy rice from the mill in Canada; buy processed imported rice, because the labour cost and other taxes make milled rice in Canada expensive.
The cost of all food has risen dramatically over the past couple of years due to gross mismanagement by the globalist Liberals.
Remember, the Liberals are extremely poor in financial management and have a no-care attitude towards Canadians.
We have a minority government voted in by woke Canadians that also have a disrespect for others, but are self-centred individuals who voted for a globalist with a Net Zero obsession, a scam that is destroying Canada.
Liberals are a woke party that has an uncontrollable habit of irresponsible spending worldwide on petty and absurd programs, ignoring domestic problems.
They have raised taxes so high that Canadians are paying 53% of their earnings on taxes to satisfy the woke liberals!
Time for another election to stop the economic disasters of the woke liberal leadership that is destroying all of Canada!
Well from My view the biggest culprit in any increase in any product , whether it be food or?. It is government involvement. Leave government out of the economy! Government has a purpose, but it is not to be involved in the economy!
At Sams Club Mexico. 5 Kilos for $10 USD. or $13.82 CDN. That's about $5.50 CDN for 2 kilos . How does one explain that Mexicans pay 50% less for rice than Canadians?
Arroz Blanco Verde Valle Súper Extra 5 pzas de 1 kg
I can’t imagine eating anything shipped in from India with the state of their sanitation problems 🤮 thry have 💩 everywhere and people pay to eat rice grown in literal human excrement 😬
White rice is not a good food. Why push this product when we can grow many other foods more suitable to our climate. We have several climates in Canada. LOL. But not for rice. Although I believe there are small scale rice operations being grown in Manitoba and they sell out fast.
This country is a mess!
For those who insist the Harper years left much to be desired...has your mind changed yet or do you have blinders on?
For those who voted for Trudeau hair...it's your fault. Now Carnage Carney continues.

Welcome to Mecca.
I stopped eating rice about 15 years ago. Nothing to do with economics, I just couldn't digest it anymore. Don't miss it at all.
You know, I've gotten the same way. I don't miss it, except when I go Chinese.

I dont know where you get your potatoes from or how you store them?
i grow my own and they usually stay good from harvest in the fall to next years July, stored in my garage, no preservatives used.
Ok. What is the secret to over wintering them? Please.

Turn up the heater in the garage then, what is the use of a heater if it is still below zere in there.
You can store carrots all winter long in the veggie drawers in you fridge
Glad you like rice an can eat it. I can't anymore, potatoes all the way.

As usual, the middlemen reaps the profits, the grower gets a pittance.
No different than the price of a bag of rolled oats in the store and the $4 the grower gets to grow a bushel(34 lbs)

There’s wild rice in Saskatchewan. :)
Rice prices have been climbing a lot ever since Covid.
Pretty convenient for the big corporate grocers. Making the same profits but selling half as much product.

Is that a tariff?
