Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra appeared at a teachers’ union event, vowing to “root out” teachers engaged in anything other than student achievement.

The directive comes following a strongly worded letter to school boards warning them that graduation ceremonies must remain “apolitical” and “strictly student-centred.”

“There are those within a system who are focused on something other than [student achievement],” he said. “And for those five per cent or less who are focused on something other than our students, other than bringing our parents and teachers together — those are the ones that we’re saying … do not continue on this path, because we will root you out of the system,” he said at the union event, according to the Toronto Star.
