Welland, Ontario, is on lockdown this morning as an active shooter situation has already sent one police officer to the hospital.
Officers responded Friday morning to reports of gunfire near Lincoln Street and Plymouth Road.
Schools and a hospital in the area are both on lockdown, and residents have been told to shelter in place.
In its third X update on the situation today, labelled “urgent,” Niagara Regional Police directed “All residents in the affected area to shelter in place immediately.”
“Lock all doors and windows and remain inside until further notice,” authorities said in an X post update.
“Avoid windows and do not leave your residence unless directed by police.”
Police also offered a short update on the officer who was struck by gunfire earlier in the day.
“The officer has been transported to hospital as a precaution to assess injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening,” said Niagara Regional Police Service on X.
The same post went on to confirm that police had “a male suspect contained in a building in the area.”
At least one media release from Niagara police suggests the shooter may have also been shot.
“As firearms were discharged by officers during the initial interaction, the Special Investigations Unit has been notified and they have invoked their mandate,” said authorities from Niagara police just minutes ago.
This situation is still unfolding, and True North will continue to provide more information as it becomes available.
