The Legislative Assembly of Nunavut has been rocked by a series of historical sexual assault charges levelled against MLA Alexander Sammurtok.

Sammurtok has agreed to retreat from his primary legislative responsibilities to address historical criminal charges but will remain on as an MLA.

Alexander Sammurtok, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Rankin Inlet North-Chesterfield Inlet, is facing six counts of sexual assault stemming from alleged incidents occurring over forty years ago, between 1982 and 1983.
