A woman who has become notorious in Ottawa for her erratic and sometimes violent behaviour at political protests has been found guilty of causing a disturbance and breaching bail conditions on Wednesday.
According to court records, Deanna Sherif is accused of assaulting a police officer, assault with a weapon, hate-motivated harassment, intimidation, and obstructing a peace officer — all of which will be addressed at her upcoming trial in early 2026.
Months earlier, Sherif had been denied bail related to eight offences, including obstructing a police officer, two counts of assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, intimidation and two counts of hate-motivated harassment.
Sherif arrived at Ottawa's Ontario Court of Justice on Wednesday wearing a keffiyeh-patterned kaftan dress and a keffiyeh headband, according to Caryma Sa’d — a lawyer and journalist who has been following Sherif’s journey through the criminal justice system.
The most recent leg in Sherif's journey through Ontario’s criminal justice system began when she was arrested in Confederation Park in August 2024 for using a noise device at a protest despite bail conditions restricting her use of such devices.
She was out on bail for those charges—under conditions prohibiting the use of sound devices—when she was arrested again in August.
The more recent incident from August, including her interactions with police and her use of a noise device, was streamed live on social media. A video of the incident was later used as evidence in court.
Sherif, a frequent presence during and after the convoy protest that took over downtown Ottawa in early 2022, became known for engaging convoy supporters in “heated exchanges,” often while livestreaming.
Such “heated exchanges” have included moments of heightened aggression, numerous physical confrontations, and the controversial—not to mention illegal—use of noisemakers.
Sherif has also become a regular fixture and attendee at demonstrations related to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
A sentencing hearing on Sherif’s current convictions is scheduled for July 24, 2025.
i bet her bank accounts weren't frozen. Deportation is the only solution.....the Arctic is pretty this time of year.....
And so where are the mounted police officers that appeared in Ottawa to trample on the freedom convoy protesters and jail time or arrests for mischief and blocking traffic on the streets?
