Newfoundland backs down on policy blocking parents from kids’ medical records
Newfoundland’s premier is reversing a policy denying parents access to their children’s medical records under a new health information system, marking a win for parents and parental rights advocates.
“We will ensure the law supports parents and guardians while protecting the best interests of children and youth,” Conservative Premier Tony Wakeham told the National Post.
A memo first reported by Juno News, emailed to parents across Newfoundland and Labrador on Jun. 19, said parents would lose access to the health records of children over 16 and would need a child’s consent to access records for those aged 12 to 15.
“A parent or legal guardsman can request proxy access to their child’s personal health record and it will be available through the parent’s MyHealthNL account if granted,” reads the letter.
