The Canadian Climate Institute published a report that found that while Ottawa “has policies to reduce emissions, the country is not on track to meet any of its climate goals.”
“The further Canada veers away from its climate targets, the steeper the path forward,” said CCI president Rick Smith on Friday.
“There is no shortage of policy tools that can accelerate climate progress while strengthening Canada’s economy and making life more affordable—but our assessment clearly shows that governments need to work together to put better policies in place for the country to reach its goals.”
Canada’s emissions reduction targets will only be 40 to 45 per cent below 2005 levels by the end of the decade, and 45 to 50 per cent by 2035.
Estimates for 2024 show emissions from oil and gas are up nine per cent since 2005, while emissions from transport and buildings have remained largely flat.
According to the latest data available from 2023, Canada has only achieved a nine per cent reduction in emissions, compared to an average 30 per cent reduction for all other G7 countries.
However, electricity emissions are down 59 per cent, with an 11 per cent drop in emissions from heavy industry.
“The data leave no doubt that Canada’s climate progress is off track,” said CCI principle economist Dave Sawyer.
The United States, the second worst group for emissions after Canada, has managed to cut emissions by 17 per cent since 2005, nearly double Canada’s rate of emissions reduction.
The study makes several recommendations, such as continuing to expand Canada’s clean electricity grid and enforcing minimum national standards for climate policies.
