Nearly 90,000 potential jobs could be lost with additional tariffs

The analysis projects the national unemployment rate could rise from 6.4 per cent to 6.8 per cent, depending on whether those who lose their jobs can find alternative vocations.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s additional 50 per cent tariffs are poised to take roughly 90,000 jobs out of the Canadian labour force, according to one economist’s analysis.

Trevor Tombe, a professor of economics at the University of Calgary, said that the newly imposed $28 billion worth of new tariffs is estimated to consume as many as 87,200 direct and indirect jobs.
