The mother of a convicted ISIS terrorist who plotted to bomb Times Square and the New York City subway system and shoot concertgoers is running to become a public school board trustee in Milton, Ontario.

American prosecutors said Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy used encrypted messages to plan attacks on Times Square, the subway system and concert venues during Ramadan in 2016.

The attacks were planned in the name of ISIS.

El Bahnasawy was arrested in New Jersey in May 2016. He pleaded guilty to terrorism-related offences and was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison in December 2018.

His mother, Khadiga R. Metwally, registered in June as a candidate for Halton District School Board trustee in Milton Wards 1 and 2.
