A Montreal municipal candidate faces serious charges after being arrested for allegedly repeatedly beating and strangling his partner over several months.
Dani Muzungu, 26, was arrested Wednesday at a residential building on Glenmore St. in Hampstead after police responded to a domestic violence call.
The former Futur Montréal party candidate for councillor in Snowdon was removed from the party and appeared in a Quebec court Thursday.
He faces eight charges, including aggravated assault, assault by strangulation, criminal harassment and uttering death threats against his 38-year-old partner. The alleged offences occurred between mid-August and Oct. 1, 2025.
“When the officers arrived, they found a 38-year-old woman with injuries requiring hospital treatment,” said Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal spokesperson Jeanne Drouin. “Her life is not in danger, but she was transported to hospital for care,”
Charges include aggravated assault, with court documents alleging Muzungu endangered her life on Oct. 1.
Additional charges include assault by strangulation, a separate assault count, and uttering death threats on the same day. Muzungu is also accused of assault by strangulation on Sept. 15 and Aug. 22, another assault on Aug. 13, and criminal harassment between Aug. 13 and Oct. 1.
“We understand the anger and concern this may cause, and we share it. As soon as we were informed, we acted immediately: this person has been removed from our team and no longer represents our party or our values,” said Futur Montréal leader and mayoral candidate Jean-Francois Kacou in a statement to the Montreal Gazette.
“We want to be clear: such behaviour has no place in our organization or in public life. I went personally in Snowdon to take down his posters last night. We have zero tolerance for such behaviours. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim.”
Futur Montreal had described Muzungu on social media as a legal professional with expertise in conflict resolution, dedicated to “improving safety around Snowdon Metro.”
Muzungu is scheduled to reappear in court Friday for a bail hearing.
