Industry Minister Mélanie Joly’s attempt to celebrate Canadian industry quickly devolved into a public embarrassment this week, after her boast that Canada has been a 158-year leader in the auto sector was swiftly corrected by the inconvenient fact that cars haven’t even existed that long.

On Feb. 5, Joly posted that “Despite global disruptions, Canada has led the automotive sector for over 158 years,” amplifying a message from Mark Carney about a new federal strategy to transform Canada into a global electric-vehicle leader.
