Minister of Justice Sean Fraser likened the Liberal’s proposed Bill C-22 to a “modern phone book” and claimed the sweeping surveillance law simply allows “cops to access a modern version of that tool” in response to criticism over the legislation turning Canada into a mass surveillance state.

Fraser testified before the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights on the proposed bill that would require telecommunications companies and electronic service providers to retain data, including users’ location information, for up to 365 days without evidence of a crime.
