Mexico overtakes Canada as top U.S. export market

America’s northern neighbour is officially losing its grip: For the first time in nearly 30 years, Canada has been knocked off its perch by Mexico as the largest market for U.S. exports, signalling a major shift in North American trade.
According to new U.S. government data released Wednesday and highlighted by The New York Times, American exports to Mexico reached $226.4 billion between January and August 2025, narrowly edging out Canada, which imported $225.6 billion worth of goods from the United States over the same period.
This marks a historic turning point. For decades, Canada was America’s most important customer, supported by closely integrated supply chains, shared energy infrastructure and longstanding trade agreements. However, recent shifts in trade policy, manufacturing dynamics and geopolitical strategy have seen Mexico gain ground, first as America’s top supplier and now as its top buyer.
Last month, Trump imposed a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian imports in response to a political dispute over a television ad that used edited audio from former U.S. President Ronald Reagan to criticize tariffs.
The ad, funded by the government of Ontario, drew backlash from the Reagan Foundation and led to the suspension of trade talks between the two countries.
The new tariffs are the latest in a series of actions that have tested the once-stable trade relationship.
While President Donald Trump has granted Mexico multiple exemptions following high-level negotiations with President Claudia Sheinbaum, no such carve-outs have been extended to Canada.
Canada and the United States remain bound by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). However, data show Mexico is rapidly becoming the United States’ primary North American trading partner for both imports and exports, while Canada’s relative share continues to decline.

Carney and the Liberals are only able to have elbows up when the US is in the conversation. Which works well when you are trying to take our economy into the dumpster.
Remember...
Canada has a jerk for a PM who, when asked about the trade talks basically told Canadian workers he cares not and to FO.
He is busy working on the complete destruction of Canada.
He cannot be bothered with such mundane details as taking care of the country he was elected to take care of by fools who refused to do their homework on this guy.
It would have only taken but a few minutes to figure this fraud out.
Liberal voters have once again failed Canada.
They seem to be doing that a lot these days.
