A 29-year-old Brampton resident, Kanwarjyot Singh Manoria, was arrested by Peel police after allegedly making a death threat against Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown.
In a Wednesday media release, police said Singh Manoria was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm. Later that day, upon being granted bail, the suspect turned to onlookers in the courtroom gallery and told them he “would stomp on their face.”
Court documents from Manoria’s bail hearing said he made threats to Brown by email in late June.
Peel Regional Police considered the threat credible. They assigned Brown protective officers, gave him a photograph of the suspect, and warned him to remain vigilant.
“We have received and are investigating a threat that was made not just against the mayor, but his family as well,” Peel Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich said during a press conference on Tuesday.
“Because of the nature of that threat, we felt it was prudent, out of an abundance of caution, to supplement him with police security until that threat was investigated appropriately,” Milinovich continued.
Despite the warnings from police, the suspect was provided bail on account of a $10,000 surety paid for by his father.
The Brampton mayor has drawn criticism from segments of the South Asian community in recent years over allegations of opportunistic pandering, controversial affiliations with Sikh separatist groups, and perceived neglect of core immigrant issues in the city.
Out on bail 😡😡
I certainly hope he does not attempt to re offend. There would be a terrible bit of “egg” on this justice’s face if that occurred.
