A 23-year-old man accused of an early-morning sexual assault in Toronto’s downtown core was already on probation when the alleged crime took place.

According to a Toronto Police Service release, officers responded to a sexual assault call around 6:47 a.m. on April 19 near Church Street and The Esplanade.

Investigators say the suspect approached the victim from behind, forced her into an isolated area, and carried out the sexual assault before fleeing when passersby intervened.

Police confirmed that Jemal Detamo, 23, was identified and arrested on April 22.
