Despite Prime Minister Mark Carney calling Beijing the biggest threat to Canada less than a year ago, his Liberal government is now open to letting Chinese state-owned companies gain majority control of Canada’s vital oil sector.
When asked whether the Liberals would “red line” the possibility of Beijing becoming a majority stakeholder in Canada’s oil patch, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said Ottawa would “calibrate” its “engagement with China” and is “open to additional investment in the energy sector by China.”
