The federal government’s finance department announced a reversal of its planned “dollar-for-dollar” fishing industry tariffs against the U.S. after listening to “feedback” in a bid to avoid “broader economic harms” the counter-tariffs could cause.
The move comes just two days after the Liberals announced $27.6 billion in counter-tariffs covering more than 700 American products with tax rates ranging as high as 50 per cent.
The Liberal government announced the countermeasures on Tuesday in response to a breakdown in Canada-U.S. trade talks and U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of a new 50 per cent tariff against Canada’s automotive and steel industry.
