A Conservative MP’s meetings in Washington — and a message delivered on behalf of President Trump — triggers sharp criticism from Liberal ministers as auto sector jobs hang in the balance.
Conservative MP Jamil Jivani says President Donald Trump asked him to pass along a message to Canadians during meetings at the White House focused on saving Canadian auto jobs. “Tell the Canadians I love them,” Trump said, according to Jivani.
Liberal ministers reacted sharply. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly criticized the visit, while Prime Minister Mark Carney stressed that the MP does not represent Canada’s official negotiating team.
