An internal briefing note prepared for Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty says Ottawa is committed to “respecting Aboriginal rights and title” while maintaining “legal clarity and stability in land ownership.”
At the same time, federal lawyers have spent nearly a decade fighting the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg’s lawsuit in Ontario Superior Court, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
The First Nation claims Aboriginal title to Parliament Hill, the Supreme Court of Canada, the national archives, the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian War Museum, Gatineau Park, islands in the Ottawa River and other federally owned lands.
