Liberals block bill on maximum security for violent killers
The bill would have required dangerous and repeat murderers to remain in maximum-security custody.
A Conservative-backed private member’s bill that sought to require some of Canada’s most notorious offenders, like convicted serial killer Paul Bernardo, to remain in maximum-security custody was defeated in the House of Commons after the Liberal government voted against it.
The proposed legislation, introduced by Conservative MP Tony Baldinelli, would have mandated that inmates classified as dangerous offenders or those convicted of multiple first-degree murders be automatically placed and kept in maximum-security institutions or designated high-security units within federal prisons.
