Liberals & NDP block Conservative motion to protect private property
Liberal and NDP MPs voted down a Conservative motion urging the federal government to protect private property rights from Indigenous land claims, an issue Conservatives say threatens property rights
For months, Conservatives under Pierre Poilievre have been taking a stand against Aboriginal title claims over land in British Columbia, which they say have endangered private property rights in the province. The issue has become a central point in the ongoing Conservative Party of British Columbia leadership race due to uncertainty stemming from recent court decisions.
On Monday, a majority of MPs voted down a Conservative Party of Canada motion calling on the federal government to ensure the fee simple property rights of British Columbians and Canadians are protected from any Indigenous land claims.
Conservatives are outraged by the decision of NDP and Liberal MPs not to affirm on the record that they would protect private property rights, even as Liberals say they will continue to defend those rights in court.
