Anandasangaree cited a potential conflict of interest tied to his personal background and community ties as a Sri Lankan native of Tamil origin who immigrated to Canada from Sri Lanka in 1983. The two groups in question are the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and the World Tamil Movement.
