Liberal minister defends appointing more party donors to judiciary
Attorney General Sean Fraser says he will not bar judicial appointments based on partisan donations.
Liberal donor appointments to the judiciary continue under a decade of Liberal rule—a pattern Attorney General Sean Fraser is unsurprisingly nonchalant about.
“I will on occasion have a candidate’s political activities flagged before a final appointment is made,” Fraser testified at the Commons justice committee Monday, as first reported by Blacklock’s Reporter.
In 2023, the Department of Justice said ministers do not receive information on political donations or affiliation when assessing judicial candidates.
“That is not something I seek information about before making appointments,” Fraser clarified, adding that aides tell him in due course.
