Liberal-appointed judge blocks Alberta independence vote
A judge has struck down a citizen-led petition over lack of First Nations consultation, halting a bid to trigger an Alberta independence vote — but Premier Danielle Smith says the province will appeal
A Liberal-appointed judge has quashed a citizen-led petition to trigger an Alberta independence referendum, ruling organizers failed to properly consult First Nations communities whose treaty rights could be affected by separation.
Premier Danielle Smith says her government will appeal the decision, calling the ruling incorrect in law and anti-democratic.
Alberta independence figure Jeff Rath joins Marc Patrone to break down the ruling, Smith’s response, and what comes next for Alberta’s independence movement.
He says the decision is likely to be overturned on appeal, arguing it contains multiple serious legal errors and that Alberta still has legal pathways to proceed with a referendum under existing legislation while the court battle continues.
