Parks Canada calls national parks a “colonial injustice”
Parks Canada is facing criticism after an internal report described national parks as a “colonial injustice,” with critics arguing Canadians should instead be proud of them.
“For millennia Indigenous people have cultivated reciprocal relationships with land, water and ice guided by cultural practices, values and knowledge systems,” said the report Evaluation Of The Indigenous Guardians Initiative Internal Review.
The 2024 Parks Canada document says national parks displaced Indigenous people and barred them from traditional lands. It was quietly released Jun. 22, according to Blacklock’s Reporter.
Management admitted to withholding the unsigned report for two years. Parks Canada did not respond to a Juno News request for comment. Keep Reading
A former Conservative candidate denied slaughtering birds — then admitted he does
Former Conservative candidate for Scarborough Southwest, Mohsin Bhuiyan, has acknowledged slaughtering birds at his Bowmanville property for his family’s consumption, after spending weeks claiming there is no slaughtering occurring at his farm while fighting against allegations that he was operating an illegal halal slaughter business.
Following a public controversy that drew in community members, media coverage, and discussions about alleged Islamophobia, Bhuiyan maintained that claims he was running a slaughter operation were false. However, after repeatedly saying that no slaughtering occurs on his property, he later confirmed that he does slaughter birds for his family’s personal use.
Bhuyian denies selling or distributing the meat and rejects allegations that he operates a commercial or illegal slaughter enterprise. Both provincial and municipal authorities have deemed that his Bowmanville “hobby farm” was not operating as an illegal abattoir. Keep Reading
