A B.C. judge cited a man’s Indigenous heritage when sentencing Orlan Marcel Dennis to life in prison for murdering his wife and teenage son. He will be eligible for parole in just 10 years.

In April 2024, Dennis shot his wife after accusing her of infidelity, then killed his 18-year-old son when he responded to the gunshot. Police later arrested him after a standoff at his mother’s home. The killings followed years of addiction and prior violence against his family, reported the National Post.

Justice Simon Coval noted Dennis’s parents were residential school survivors and that he grew up in poverty amid violence and substance abuse. Dennis is a member of the Tsay Keh Dene First Nation.
