Israeli PM demands Carney walk back his Palestine “genocide” response

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unexpectedly commented on Canadian politics amidst the federal election, sharply criticizing Liberal Leader Mark Carney for remarks he made at a Calgary rally earlier this week.
In an X post made on Thursday, Netanyahu slammed Carney, accusing him of undermining a democratic ally in its fight against Hamas and urging him to retract comments that appeared to align with anti-Israel sentiments.
Additionally, Netanyahu called on Liberal Party leader Mark Carney to walk back comments he made during a Calgary rally earlier this week.
During the rally, a heckler shouted, “Mr. Carney! There’s a genocide happening in Palestine right now,” to which Carney responded, “Thank you, thank you, I’m aware—which is why we have an arms embargo.”
Carney, campaigning ahead of an April 28 federal election, clarified his stance Wednesday, saying he hadn’t heard the word “genocide” amid the rally’s noise.
“I heard Gaza, and my point was I’m aware of the situation in Gaza,” he told reporters in Calgary, noting Canada’s restrictions on arms exports to Israel, with exceptions for the Iron Dome defence system.
In his comment on X, Netanyahu suggested Carney’s response represented a departure from Canada’s historical stance on foreign policy in the Middle East.
“Canada has always sided with civilization,” Netanyahu wrote. “So should Mr. Carney.”
“But instead of supporting Israel, a democracy that is fighting a just war with just means against the barbarians of Hamas, he attacks the one and only Jewish state. Mr. Carney, backtrack your irresponsible statement!”
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs echoed Netanyahu’s concerns over Carney’s initial response, arguing it fuels antisemitism at a time when Jewish Canadians face rising threats. “This is an affront to our way of life in Canada,” CIJA said in a statement on X.
“There is no genocide in Gaza. Claiming otherwise is false,” CIJA continued.
At the time of publication, the Carney campaign has offered neither a response nor a retraction.
