A spokesperson for Israel’s prime minister is calling on Prime Minister Mark Carney to “reconsider” his pledge to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he comes to Canada.
As first reported by Reuters and The Times of Israel, Shosh Bedrosian, a spokeswoman for the office of Netanyahu, told reporters Tuesday that Carney should reverse his stance on arresting the Israeli Prime Minister and criticized Canada’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state.
“We believe that Prime Minister Carney should, of course, reconsider this and welcome Prime Minister Netanyahu, the leader of the only Jewish state and democratic country in the Middle East, to Canada,” Bedrosian said. “Bedrosian said.
She also reportedly called Canada’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state a “prize for terrorism,” which “only poured fuel on an antisemitic fire in Canada”.
The comments come after Carney announced Thursday that Canada would honour former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s pledge to arrest Netanyahu if he arrived in Canada. Carney cited outstanding International Criminal Court warrants for the Israeli prime minister and his former defence minister, Yoav Gallant, over alleged war crimes.
Earlier this year, the ICC issued arrest warrants alleging it found “reasonable grounds” to believe Netanyahu and Gallant were “criminally responsible” for alleged war crimes, including starvation, intentionally directing attacks against civilians, murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts between Oct. 8, 2023, and May 20, 2024.
Israel has rejected the charges, calling them “politically motivated.”
At the time, Netanyahu denied the allegations, stating the Israeli Defence Force does everything in its power to avoid civilian casualties. He cited sending warnings to civilians of imminent attacks and providing aid to Gaza, including “700,000 tons of food,” which he claimed were often looted by Hamas.
When the arrest warrants were issued, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre called them “ridiculous.” He added that Trudeau should have instead called for the arrest of the Ayatollah of Iran, who funds terrorist groups and has called for the annihilation of both Israel and the US.
If anyone needs arresting, it's the con man. Him and his cabinet should be behind bars permanently, for treason and fraud. Better still exiled from the country, as people don't like hanging. Although that would be the preferential choice.
