A prominent Islamic centre in Ontario is distancing itself from a Ramadan memorial event posted on its website for the dead Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after facing public backlash.

The Islamic Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaat of Toronto (ISIJ) had promoted a “12th of Ramadhan Isale Sawab Majlis for Shaheed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (RA)” at the Masumeen Islamic Centre in Brampton.

The phrase refers to a religious memorial in which prayers are offered so that spiritual rewards are dedicated to the deceased. The posting described Khamenei as a “martyr.”
